The legal status of cryptocurrencies varies substantially from country to country and is still undefined or changing in many of them. At least one study has shown that broad generalizations about the use of bitcoin in illicit finance are significantly overstated and that blockchain analysis is an effective crime fighting and intelligence gathering tool. https://assisesletrot2020.com/ While some countries have explicitly allowed their use and trade, others have banned or restricted it. According to the Library of Congress in 2021, an “absolute ban” on trading or using cryptocurrencies applies in 9 countries: Algeria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, China, Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates. An “implicit ban” applies in another 39 countries or regions, which include: Bahrain, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Gabon, Georgia, Guyana, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lesotho, Macau, Maldives, Mali, Moldova, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palau, Republic of Congo, Saudi Arabia, Sengeal, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Qatar and Vietnam. In the United States and Canada, state and provincial securities regulators, coordinated through the North American Securities Administrators Association, are investigating “Bitcoin scams” and ICOs in 40 jurisdictions.
In terms of annual consumption (kWh/yr), the figures were: Polkadot (70,237), Tezos (113,249), Avalanche (489,311), Algorand (512,671), Cardano (598,755) and Solana (1,967,930). This equates to Polkadot consuming 7 times the electricity of an average U.S. home, Cardano 57 homes and Solana 200 times as much. The research concluded that PoS networks consumed 0.001% the electricity of the bitcoin network. University College London researchers reached a similar conclusion.
Various studies have found that crypto-trading is rife with wash trading. Wash trading is a process, illegal in some jurisdictions, involving buyers and sellers being the same person or group, and may be used to manipulate the price of a cryptocurrency or inflate volume artificially. Exchanges with higher volumes can demand higher premiums from token issuers. A study from 2019 concluded that up to 80% of trades on unregulated cryptocurrency exchanges could be wash trades. A 2019 report by Bitwise Asset Management claimed that 95% of all bitcoin trading volume reported on major website CoinMarketCap had been artificially generated, and of 81 exchanges studied, only 10 provided legitimate volume figures.

Coinbase is a bit of a unique beast. It’s the de-facto standard for reputability, having great legal and security history, even going so far as to actively block transfers out to known scam addresses, just to help prevent you from burning yourself. Coinbase is also the primary entry point for the majority of institutional investors for this reason. On the other hand, their coin variety listing is quite bad, they don’t offer margin/options trading, and their trading fees are high for the market at 0.5%. That said, they offer free ACH bank transfers, no withdrawal fees, and their trading fee drops quickly for high volume traders.
Colorado’s securities commissioner filed a legal complaint against Eligio Regalado, who goes by Eli, and his wife, Kaitlyn Regalado, last week. The couple raised nearly $3.2 million by targeting Denver’s Christian community with the cryptocurrency, marketed as INDXcoin, the complaint said.
“We took God at His word and sold a cryptocurrency with no clear exit,” Regalado said in the video, adding that he had also been divinely instructed to abandon his former business to take over INDXcoin.
The couple allegedly sold the “illiquid and practically worthless” tokens from June 2022 to April 2023 through a cryptocurrency exchange they created called Kingdom Wealth Exchange, Commissioner Chan said in the statement. The sales supported the couple’s “lavish lifestyle,” he alleged.

The very first cryptocurrency was Bitcoin. Since it is open source, it is possible for other people to use the majority of the code, make a few changes and then launch their own separate currency. Many people have done exactly this. Some of these coins are very similar to Bitcoin, with just one or two amended features (such as Litecoin), while others are very different, with varying models of security, issuance and governance. However, they all share the same moniker — every coin issued after Bitcoin is considered to be an altcoin.
Unlike traditional fiat currencies, the Bitcoin network is decentralised, meaning that it is not controlled by any central authority, such as a government or bank. Instead, it relies on a distributed network of computers, known as nodes, to validate and record transactions. This facilitates peer-to-peer, global exchange and eliminates the need for third-party intermediaries, making Bitcoin widely accessible.
What sets Bitcoin apart from several other assets is its limited supply. There will only ever be 21 million bitcoins created, which gives it scarcity similar to precious metals like gold. Bitcoins are created through mining, where individuals or organizations use powerful computers to solve complex mathematical problems and validate transactions on the network. Miners receive newly minted Bitcoins as rewards for their contributions to the network’s security and transaction processing.
While Bitcoin is technically inflationary because new coins are continuously mined, the halving events gradually slow down this inflation until it eventually stops around the year 2140, when all 21 million coins will have been mined. This controlled inflation is a key feature of Bitcoin’s tokenomics, helping to preserve its value over time.
